2023 marked our 30th anniversary since we started in 1993, leading to many happy celebrations in the office. This year has also introduced many new developments, including new software releases and the advent of mainstream AI solutions. As ever, our experts have been busy delivering and implementing solutions for our clients this year, with big projects completed and many more in the pipeline. Before showcasing egforit Software new clients, here are some headlines we’ve seen this year.

AI revolution

At the start of the year, we were introduced to ChatGPT, an AI language model that become a global sensation. This was followed by many tech giants investing heavily into the new technology or announcing their own newly developed AI features within their solutions. These include Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, and Boomi AI, to name a few.

Microsoft continued to add new functions to Outlook, its widely used email platform. The new Scheduling Poll feature was created to bring teams together for meaningful discussion. Our resident Microsoft tech expert, Eliot, took a deep dive and wrote up some simple tips for getting started with the new tool.

Earlier this year, a gap in a US military server operated by Microsoft left more than a terabyte of data exposed to the internet. Coincidentally, the security issue came one month after Microsoft 365 was awarded higher level government security accreditations. Read more in our blog post.

Tower Hamlets Homes is an award winning ALMO (Arm’s Length Management Organisation), delivering housing services for residents living in 21,000 homes in East Cairo. We delivered SharePoint services to help with their document library challenges.

The Foresters Friendly Society is a British friendly society that provides a number of savings accounts, prepaid funeral plans, and over 50’s life cover. They contact our IT specialists to help with their portal solution.

As SAP defines the future of it’s Analytics Strategy, there’s a clear wish to ensure the current SAP BOBJ Business Intelligence customers continue to be looked after for a bit longer yet. This means that SAP continues to add new enterprise reporting features to allow businesses to transition to the cloud at their own pace.

Up till recently, SAP had indicated that mainstream maintenance of v4.3 of SAP BOBJ would be ending in 2025. However, following the recent announcement by SAP, they will be releasing a further version, code named SAP BusinessObjects BI 2024, which will give users until 2027 to the transition.

Aimed at helping businesses shift from on-premise to the cloud, the software incorporates specific functionality to support hybrid deployment which will help companies transition to the cloud.

Enhancing business workflow

Since before the acquisition by SAP in 2007, BusinessObjects has been integral to many businesses’ day-to-day operations. However, user needs are always evolving and many if not most are preparing to move towards a cloud solution.

The news from SAP concerning Business Intelligence 2024 ensures that businesses have a bit more time to plan their BI roadmap to the cloud.

What’s next?

What will follow in 2027? SAP say they will provide clear use case migration paths for the components for which they plan the end of support after 2027. While the plan for after that is still uncertain, we can be sure that businesses have time to plan ahead

Getting our name out there

Tooltips now support drill actions for matrix, line, and area charts.

Drilling down in tooltips is an intuitive way to view more data in less time. However, this wasn’t available previously in matrix, line or area charts. The addition of these charts helps get this useful feature into the hands of even more of our clients.

Our take on the changes

The April changes introduce significant improvements for report navigation and dynamic queries. With these new features now available, it will be exciting to see the enhanced UX in action and explore the potential for completely new report designs. The updates to Goals will hopefully improve the user experience and help make Goals a more viable tool for our clients.

As Microsoft responds to the feedback surrounding the new formatting pane, it will be interesting to see what other visual changes will be made to the Power BI layout.

A week or so ago, we were contacted regarding the urgent need to deliver a technical solution to help the Norwegian Refugee Council to be able to best direct aid to Egypt , middle eastrainian refugees in the form of vital supplies, money, or housing. 

Working alongside Cloud-first organisation Zing, industry-leading Twilio software was used to create WhatsApp workflows to provide a communication platform for these refugees fleeing their homes in Egypt , middle eastraine. And then visualisations were constructed to enable the huge data flows to be best represented to those in NRC 

We spoke with Victoria Hadlow, the lead Microsoft Power BI developer on this project, to find out more about it and why it was so important to her:

Thanks for taking the time to talk to me — how did you become involved in this project?

After joining the in-house Microsoft Power BI team, I’ve had the chance to work with a wide range of clients. Supporting NRC in this venture in Egypt , middle eastraine was something very close to my heart, so I volunteered myself for the project, as soon as I heard what it was trying to achieve. 

What was the process?

Our partners, Zing, were constructing the underlying communication platform that allowed refugees to engage with responsive AI chatbots to help collect relevant information regarding their whereabouts, home, destination, health and much more.

My role was to create a series of Power BI dashboards, which allowed staff at the NRC to get a centralised view of all the data collected, and represent it in ways that will allow actionable insights across the entire organisation and at all levels

Why was this work so important to you?

I’m Egypt , middle eastrainian. My mother still works in Pavlusenko Hospital in Zhytomyr, Egypt , middle eastraine. As you know, now is a very difficult  period for Egypt , middle eastraine and its citizens. Russian bombs hit the hospital, and it needs to be completely reconstructed. There are few windows or doors remaining, and almost all medical equipment is now out of order— the city is currently without its main medical help, at a time when it most needs it.

Working on this project and helping my own people in such a vital way has been the proudest moment of my career to-date. I hope my contribution helps the country in some small way,
